Windows upgrades

Just bitten the bullet and installed Windows XP Pro on my computer, upgrading from Windows 2000. I installed it myself too! This is momentuous, as I usually get Z to do all that stuff.

Once upon a time I had a 20gb partitioned hard drive with windows on it, and a 80Gb hard drive also. The 80Gb died a while back, and I had not bothered to rectify the situation, as I store most things on the server anyway. I recently procured a DVD burner, and discovered that I had just under 2Gb on C:\ left, and about 2Gb left on D:\. This was not enough to store the info which I want to burn to DVD. I looked around to see if I could free up any space, and couldn't find a thing that was expendable. I ended up burning off the server instead. I'd been thinking about going to Windows XP Pro for a while, but the DVD burner incident made my mind up. Upgrading it was.

A new 250Gb hard drive was bought for the server to stretch storage space even more and to replace an 80Gb hard drive so I could steal it for my own computer. I currently have Windows XP installed on the 80Gb and I'm getting everything set up and making sure that all my save games will transfer correctly. The 20Gb is sitting safely out of the way so that I can go back to my old set up at a moments notice if I need to. Once I have Windows XP in top notch, I shall wipe the 20Gb and get Z to ghost the 80Gb onto the 20Gb. The 20Gb will then be purely for the operating system, and the 80Gb will be my play space.

Naturally, situations like these are never allowed to be a walk in the park. Something _must_ go wrong, it's the rule. I just tried to plug in the 20Gb as a secondary hard drive so that I could grab some info off it for the new set up. Didn't happen. Wouldn't detect for a start, even after jumpers were changed. I haven't investigated too hard or had Z look at it yet, since I have work soon and it's not terribly important at this stage. What this development does mean is I was unable to grab my old dowloaded executable for my livejournal client from the old setup quickly this morning. On quick and non-thorough inspection, the client I had is now not listed on the livejournal client download page. Long and short, I download Semagic and am currently using it to write this post. It seems to have more features than my previous client, about which I have not decided if it is good or bad. I liked the simplicity of the previous client, whatever it was. Then again, I may as well change to more features now while change is happening anyway.

On a quick last note, I have been thinking about livejournal entries a lot without getting around to actually typing them. I had decided what I was definitely going to do my next post about though. This is not it. I shall still have to do a post about the thought I had sometime. Cross the fingers that it happens.

I mentioned in passing to Z what had happened, and he made the comment that I should take the DVD burner out and put the second hdd on the end of that cable, as the information would transfer much quicker. I'll try that after work today and see if it will detect that way.
