Excited about my 80's weekend that's coming up in May. The previous movie night didn't work so well, so this weekend will be concentrating more on "party with movies" instead of "movies must be watched". Yay for nostalgia!

Most of you will know I play trombone in a brass band. In a brass band, the majority of the trombones read treble clef (all except the bass trombone). Closed position (slide all the way in) is a "middle C" of treble clef (B flat below middle C on the piano). However in a big band, concert band, jazz band, or an orchaestra, the trombone reads bass clef. If a treble clef trombone was playing "middle C", the bass clef reader would be playing a "B flat" - the one that is the second line up on the stave. Why is this relevant? Well last night I started playing in a big band (swing, mo town, etc) and so have been learning a whole new trombone language. It's a little tricky, but I've picked it up fairly quickly this last week, and am looking forward to getting even more fluent. I started out playing piano, which means I can read treble clef and bass clef pretty fluently, it's just switching into a different mode to assign new slide positions to different notes, and making the associations stick. My brain throws me a few curve balls sometimes - I read a "G" on the bass clef and go to play the treble clef position for it occasionally. There's a concert on the 23rd of May that I'm hoping that I'll be at my normal skill level for, just have to somehow make myself practise bass clef once or twice a week on top of the band practise!

Had a fantastic long weekend, it did a lot to relieve the cabin fever I've been feeling at work lately. Various people have been on and off holidays or sick since Easter, so it means that for a few weeks I've been virtually a prisoner inside the shop since there's been noone from Osborne Park who can spare the time in Myaree to relieve me for a lunch break. I don't object to eating food at my desk, I do that usually anyway, but it feeling of being stuck in one place can definitely get to me after that long while! The three days off over the Anzac weekend were bliss. Some people have come back from holidays, but other people have gone off, so the cabin-fever will most likely build up again until everyone's back after mid-May. Contemplating taking a few days holidays then, or if just having a really long lunch break or two will be enough.

Liza Minelli will be in Perth at the end of the year according to the Ticketek newsletter. I think she would be pretty cool to see, just weighing the want against the money.
