Flute, Sega, Dye, Book
Thursday, November 27th, 2008 01:48 pmI have this fabulous op-shop next to my shop. It's not too big, but it has a good range and a decent book section. I've picked up quite a few little goodies there over the last three months, but the best by far I picked up on Monday. A $50 flute. Yup, that's right, $50. Now these things are usually at least a few hundred second-hand, and I laid my hands on one for $50. I love this op-shop! Turns out my brother has been hankering to play a flute for many years now, so he swung by on Monday night and took home his new treasure.
I scored recently too. Someone I know moved two years ago and was finally getting around to unpacking the second half of the boxes that hadn't been touched for all that time. Turns out there was a bunch of electronic stuff there, and they wanted to know if I knew somewhere to drop it off to instead of just throwing it away. "Well," I said, "You could take it to this place I've Googled up, or you could just give it all to me and I'll either use it, find homes for it, or throw it away myself." Sounded good to them. So Zig's mum will now get a set top box, and I....well I gots me an old Sega Saturn with a bunch of games to play with. Yay! Will have a lot of fun playing Sonic the Hedgehog and the rest. Should it occur that I grow bored of my new (old) toy, there's a friend's roommate that likes his old consoles that I will give it to. It's the first real console that's been mine though - the VIC 20 and Commodore 64 don't count, besides belonging to the family and not me. Otherwise it's just been what I've played at friends' houses. So, the only other thing to fill my childhood dreams of consoles is to score an old NES with Super Mario Bros 2 in future years. No rush, plenty of years ahead of me yet.
It's nice to finally be able to say my hair is definitely a certain colour, instead of having that in between colour. I think I suit brown quite well. I think I'll dye it again though - the same colour but leave it in for longer and see if the auburn happens this time. Not sure when exactly, should I wait until I have roots to cover or just dive right in and dye over the top of the current colour? Also, how will the current dye affect the new dye ie. will it have no effect at all or will it act like I left the dye in for a bit already? Tricksy questions.
I bought "High Hunt" by David Eddings at the op-shop as I was curious to see how one of his non-fantasy books went. I'm not sure why I picked it up off the bookshelf last week, because I've been finding it hard to read non-fantasy books recently (for no reason I can figure out) but I've been really enjoying it. It's not a cookie-cutter story either! It's easy to read like his other books, but otherwise you wouldn't pick it for an Eddings book. I'm currently about two thirds through. I heartily recommend it, although not to Elizabeth - it's a pretty gritty storyline and there's a scene described about gutting a deer that was a little hard for me to keep reading. I think I might track down "The Losers" and read that too at some point.
