Goodbye Creosote
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007 05:47 pmOur server died the other day (the main hard drive shredded itself) and Zig had only just a few weeks earlier wiped the other two backups he'd had of the Linux kernal. That server had lasted through several incarnations for at least 4-5 years until last Tuesday night. As all the other hard drives in the server are formatted using Linux, we can't access the masses of music, tv shows, movies, etc that we had on there until he spends many hours/days building a new Linux kernel from scratch. Alas poor Creosote (the server's name), you served us mightily well.
The extra, extra downside of this is that there were a few valuable things stored on the main hard drive that weren't backed up anywhere, other than the recently wiped back ups of course. Things like a multitude of photos and movies that Zig had taken while out on his many dirt bike rides, or my website which included stories I'd written back in highschool (among other things) that I don't think were stored anywhere else. Anything found at *.maow.myip.org, including not just the email server, but all the emails I'd kept in that account too.
It was quite a blow. My gmail address is now my primary email. Maow mail is dead as far as I'm concerned even if Zig resurrects it further down the track. I can probably do without my personal website if I'm honest with myself, although I have a plan hatching in which one day I may have a professional website (served elsewhere dammit!). Zig is hoping that we may be able to recover some of the data to get his photos back, so maybe my stories too. Trouble is that when you try to recover lost data, you can see what type of file it is/used to be, but there's no file name. As it was a rather large hard drive with many many files on it, it will require much trawling to recover.
